My Design Challenge Process
This is a home-brewed design process that draws inspiration from various industry standard methodologies (4D/Double Diamond). I utilise this to complete design challenges with consistent outcomes. I use a problem statement generator to set the task (sharpen.design) with a focal point on digital products and a singular user feature to help contain the scope of the challenge.
The brief
Interogate the brief. Pick out the critical asking points.
Current state research
Research current implementations, competitors, and UI patterns of market leaders.
Future state and Mood board
Research your competitors and relevant inspiration sites like Mobbin. Create a mood board to reference periodically.
Build
Build the new design solution in the tool of choice (currently Figma).
Reflection
I take some time to reflect on what I have learned, any mistakes made, and think about what steps could be next.
Caveats
I understand that applying this process to design challenges has some significant drawbacks that need to be taken into account.
The main issue that needs to be addressed is the lack of end users and user research. This means that there is a lack of ability to iterate with feedback and no confirmation on whether the design solution will provide any value. However the overall aim of these is for myself to learn following a design process and expose myself to common UI patterns, best practices and tooling experience.
